On the Move: Where To ‘Live’ As A Digital Nomad And Business Owner

You probably chose a digitally nomadic lifestyle as a way not to have to be anchored to one location. But you probably chose to be a business owner for the stability it brings. Never fear, the two ideas can live hand-in-hand, and today’s tips can help you run a neat and tidy business from any of our four favorite cities.

Today’s post is brought to you by Lance Cody-Valdez and Cochran Writing & Editing.

Where To Live?

There are plenty of places you might choose to put down roots. But a few of the best for those in a digital climate include Seattle, Washington; Miami, Florida; Harlingen, Texas; and Lynchburg, Virginia.

Seattle, WA

If you need inspiration, look no further than the Emerald City. With beautiful views and adorable neighborhoods around every corner, you may not find that there’s no place like home better than Seattle. You’ll find lots of real estate for sale, but you also have no shortage of choices when it comes to condos and townhomes.

Miami, FL

Miami also offers no shortage of sites and sounds, but instead of mountains, you’ll find beaches and beautiful bodies here. Keep Florida Working explains there are also lots of investment opportunities in the Florida area, and you can inject money into digital marketing, tourism, translation, and more if you’re looking for a new income stream. And fortunately, Miami is actually around 12% less expensive overall than Seattle.

Lynchburg, VA--a top city for a digital nomad

Lynchburg, VA

For Southern hospitality and an area rich in history, Lynchburg doesn’t disappoint. Adding to the fact that it’s more than 9% lower than the national average to live here, Salary.com also points out that the minimum wage in Virginia is $12 per hour, way up from the national minimum wage of $7.25. Although it might cost you a bit more to hire employees, you won’t have a problem finding a family-oriented neighborhood. And if you need a temporary place to check out the area, Carrie Cochran recommends The Carriage House, which is located close to the mountains.

Harlingen, TX

If you’re looking for more of a hometown feel with a fairly low price tag, Harlingen delivers. The average home price here is just over $177,000, according to Zillow. The people are great, the food is delicious, and you’re only about 30 miles from the Gulf of Mexico.

Best Bet Business Practices

No matter where you choose to live, you have to prioritize your business. A few things to do here include:

  • Set up your LLC. This is relatively inexpensive using a formation service online. You can save money compared to hiring an attorney if you don’t mind doing state-specific research. An LLC protects your personal assets.
  • Come up with a marketing plan. If your business, like yourself, moves around a lot, make sure you have an active social media presence and that you have a tangible piece of marketing material to leave behind with you wherever you go. A free business card template can help you come up with the perfect design. Think business cards are outdated? Guess again. Today’s cards can be fully customized, and people are more likely to look at these than an email.
  • Let your customers know you’re on the go. Chances are, your customers (and even vendors) will appreciate and enjoy watching you on your adventures. If you are not going to personally be available, make sure your customers know this and that they are aware of who they will communicate with in your absence.

As a remote-based entrepreneur, you can choose where you want to live. From coast to coast, you have lots of options. But, before you settle into your new roaming lifestyle, take the time to tidy up the loose ends. Create your business structure, know your marketing goals, and let your customers know when you are not available and who they can trust on the days when your wanderlust has you out of the office.
