The Winter Fun Never Ends at Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre

Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre on a sunny day

If you’re looking for a fun and affordable place to enjoy some winter fun year-round in Virginia, you have to check out the Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre in Lynchburg, VA!

Every year at Thanksgiving, Daniel and I leave the holiday craziness behind and go on a quiet getaway somewhere in Virginia. We’ve been doing this for several years now, and it’s always a great opportunity to recharge while we binge-watch TV and explore new towns. But of course, we always add in a few fun activities while we’re there! 2 years ago, we explored Lynchburg, Virginia, and we absolutely loved it! It’s right by the mountains, and the town has miles of trails–not to mention some fantastic local dining options.

We visited again this year, but we wanted to try some new activities, so we turned to my Adventure Bucketlist cards from RIO! You might have seen these in my recent post about holiday gifts for travelers, and I love them. Each box has 50 scratch-off adventures for your state, organized by location. My Virginia box had several cards for Lynchburg, so we scratched off two and tried both recommendations, including the Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre.

If it weren’t for these cards, I don’t think I would have discovered this year-round snowsports center, but I’m so glad we got to try it! We had an absolute blast, and it made for a great (and fairly affordable) afternoon activity! So, in this week’s post, I want to tell you all about the Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre, along with some tips on what to wear to ensure you have a fun (and safe) time.

Snow Sports & More at Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre

Liberty University is definitely not skimping on entertainment for its students! The Snowflex Centre has a ton of wintery fun for everyone, whether you like your big or little thrills.

Skiing & Snowboarding

Full view of the big ski and snowboard hill

The biggest draws here are undoubtedly skiing and snowboarding. The Snowflex Centre has a bunny hill out front for any newbies (like us), as well as a huge slope in the back, complete with ramps, rails, and small obstacles. So whether you’re a beginner or more advanced, you can still have a lot of fun here.

The center is equipped with Snowflex, a special system that closely replicates actual snow but doesn’t require cold weather. This is how they can offer skiing and snowboarding all year long! However, it’s also a lot rougher to land on that typical snow. The system has a concrete pad underneath a layer of Snowflex, which personally felt like astroturf. So, anytime you wipe out, it will hurt just a bit, and I highly recommend staying as covered as possible to avoid scratches.

Both hills also have lifts to get you from the bottom to the top quickly without wearing you out.

We chose to focus primarily on snowboarding, and it was so much fun! We’d never tried it before and definitely had our share of wipeouts. But we still had a great time, and the staff was great about giving us pointers to get us started.

Sledding

If you’re looking for something extra chill, you can go sledding on the other side of their bunny hill! It’s divided down the middle so small children (and fun-loving adults) can sled without competing with the skis and snowboards.

Tubing

Another one of my favorite activities here was tubing! The SnowflexCentre has two tubing runs made from Neveplast that are also open year-round. The shorter run is wider and can accommodate two tubes at once if you want to go down with a child or partner. The taller run starts from the top of the hill and only has room for one tube at a time.

You’ll pick up your tube at the bottom of the hill and ride their ski lift to either the first or second landing, depending on which run you want to do. This is the same lift the skiers and snowboarders use for the main slope, but the tubing runs are on the other side.

The tubing isn’t a huge thrill, but you pick up some decent speed as you go, and there’s a decent chance you’ll spin around and go backward, too. We all enjoyed this enough to do it twice. If we’d had more time, I probably would have gone again, too!

Trampoline

The last activity offered at the Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre isn’t a snow sport, but it sure can be fun! They have an Olympic-grade trampoline you can access with their combo pass if you feel like bouncing around! Just don’t forget to bring a change of clothes you can move in easily.

Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre Pricing

I loved how affordable and flexible the pricing here was. Especially coming in as a complete newbie to snow sports, I didn’t want to spend a ton of money or commit to a full day. But their various pricing options are very inclusive, so there’s a great choice for pretty much any budget and interest.

We got their 2-Hour Combo Pass, which included every activity and equipment rental for just $25. This was perfect for dipping our toes into snowboarding and trying some other stuff, too.

They also offer hourly ($8) and day pass ($25) options for skiing and snowboarding, with unlimited access to both hills. However, equipment rentals cost an additional $16.

They also have hourly tubing for $17, which includes tubes and unlimited rides down both tubing runs.

What to Wear to Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre

I have a pretty good understanding of how to dress for cold weather, but since we were going to be dealing with Snowflex instead of actual snow, I wasn’t really sure what to wear for our day.

Since it was November in the mountains, I ended up wearing the ski coat that I got for Iceland, a beanie, fleece-lined leggings and jeans, and boots. I wanted to wear my waterproof hiking pants over my leggings, but they were in storage for the winter, so I opted for jeans.

In retrospect, I definitely should have gone with a waterproof outer layer for bottoms, too. Even though the Snowflex isn’t real snow, they constantly mist it with water to keep it slick. So anytime you fall, you get wet. By the end of the 2 hours, my pants were absolutely soaked! Thankfully, the leggings kept me warm.

If it’s cold, I would recommend wearing actual ski pants if you have them or doubling up leggings and waterproof pants. If it’s warm, I’d go with a lighter, waterproof outer layer like hiking pants to stay dry while still protecting your legs. Because the Snowflex is so rough, it’s important to keep yourself covered up as much as possible so you don’t get scratched up. For that reason, you’ll also want gloves to protect your hands. I did a couple of runs without them and immediately regretted it.
